Pitru Tarpana, often referred to simply as Tarpana, is a significant ritual in Hindu culture performed to honor and pay respects to one's ancestors, particularly one's deceased parents and forefathers. The term "Pitru" refers to ancestors or forefathers, and "Tarpana" means offering water.
The ritual of Pitru Tarpana is typically performed by male members of the family, particularly the eldest son or other male descendants, although in some families, women may also participate. It is usually conducted on specific days considered auspicious for ancestral worship, such as Amavasya (new moon), Mahalaya Paksha (Pitru Paksha), and certain days during the Hindu lunar calendar dedicated to ancestor worship.
The person performing the ritual cleanses themselves by bathing and wearing clean clothes. They then set up a sacred space, often near a water body or at home, where the ritual will take place.
A special platform or altar is prepared with items needed for the ritual, including water, black sesame seeds (til), darbha grass, and sometimes rice or barley.
The ritual begins with the chanting of mantras and prayers to invoke the blessings of the ancestors. The performer may also invoke the presence of specific ancestors, such as parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents, by reciting their names.
Water, mixed with black sesame seeds and darbha grass, is offered to the ancestors while chanting prayers. The water is poured from the hands in a specific manner to symbolize the offering reaching the ancestors in the afterlife.
Throughout the ritual, various prayers, mantras, and hymns from sacred texts like the Rigveda or Garuda Purana may be recited to seek blessings for the well-being and spiritual upliftment of the ancestors' souls.
After the offerings are made, the performer seeks blessings from the ancestors for themselves and their family members. They may then distribute the remaining offerings, such as water and sesame seeds, as prasad (blessed food) to family members and guests.
Pitru Tarpana is believed to fulfill ancestral obligations, seek forgiveness for any shortcomings or offenses committed against ancestors, and invoke their blessings for prosperity, health, and well-being in the family. It is considered a sacred duty and an expression of gratitude towards one's lineage and heritage.
